Helminth communities of loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) from Central and Western Mediterranean Sea: the importance of host's ontogeny.

We investigated the factors providing structure to the helminth communities of 182 loggerhead sea turtles, Caretta caretta, collected in 6 localities from Central and Western Mediterranean. Fifteen helminth taxa (10 digeneans, 4 nematodes and 1 acanthocephalan) were identified, of which 12 were specialist to marine turtles; very low numbers of immature individuals of 3 species typical from fish or cetaceans were also found. These observations confirm the hypothesis that phylogenetic factors restrict community composition to helminth species specific to marine turtles. Host-based lipid inflammation drives pathogenesis in Francisella infection

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) was used to elucidate host lipids involved in the inflammatory signaling pathway generated at the host-pathogen interface during a septic bacterial infection. Using Francisella novicida as a model organism, a bacterial lipid virulence factor (endotoxin) was imaged and identified along with host phospholipids involved in the splenic response in murine tissues. Anti-Inflammatory Activity and Cheminformatics Analysis of New Poten t 2-Substituted 1-Methyl-5-Nitroindazolinones.

After the identification of the anti-inflammatory properties of VA5-13l (2-benzyl-1- methyl-5-nitroindazolinone) in previous investigations, some of its analogous compounds were designed, synthesized and evaluated in two anti-inflammatory methods: LPS-enhanced leukocyte migration assay in zebrafish; and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced mouse ear edema. The products evaluated (3, 6, 8, 9 and 10) showed the lower values of relative leukocyte migration at 30#181;M (0.14, 0.07, 0.10, 0.13 and 0.07, respectively), while in ear edema and myeloperoxidase activity methods, all the compounds reduced inflammation, only 4 and 16 yielded unsatisfactory results. Participation of Heme Oxygenase-1 in a Model of Acute Inflammation

In this study, the role of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in the inflammatory response elicited by zymosan in the mouse air pouch model has been examined. This response is characterized by a time-dependent increase in HO-1 expression in the leukocytes migrating into the exudates. At 24–48 h maximal HO-1 expression was accompanied by reduced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and nitric oxide synthase-2 (NOS-2) expression as well as low levels of inflammatory mediators. Role of prostaglandin E2 in the invasiveness, growth and protection of cancer cells in malignant pleuritis.

The recurrence of pleural effusions is a common event in a variety of neoplastic diseases. The objective of this study was to identify the mechanisms promoting the homing and growth of cancer cells within the pleural space. A cancer cell line recovered from malignant pleural fluids (lung adenocarcinoma cell line) that constitutively expresses cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and all types of prostaglandin receptors was studied.
